I had a nice day. Stayed around the house and enjoyed my family for most of the day, then out to dinner last night. My sweet kids and hubby got me yellow box flip flops, a Southern Belle t-shirt, and a new Kavu purse. Ron & Kay, my in laws gave me money. My mom had a small birthday party for me today and I got a Smurfette Christmas ornament and money from my sister. Smurfette was my FAVORITE when I was little. I had my tonsils out when I was six years old and my dad surprised me with a Smurfette doll in my suitcase when I got to the hospital. I still have that doll and my girls play with her now. My mom and my aunt Bertie also gave me money. A perfect gift considering I'm going back to work next week and need some work clothes that fit!

I don't mind getting older. I had always heard the saying that "with age comes wisdom". The older I get the more I see that this is true. Especially now that I have a teenager. Becoming wise can be painful sometimes. I've learned that material things don't really matter. In the world today there's so much focus on having the newest of everything and the best of everything. What really matters is God and family.

The older I get the more I realize how wise my dad was. He passed away a few years ago, but left a strong legacy of faith and family. I hope to be like him in many ways. He never cared what others thought, or about "keeping up with the Jones'". He always said "It's all dirt". He grew up without a father and basically lived in poverty. He worked hard to educate himself and get a good job to support us. He persevered through some horrible physical problems without ever complaining or giving up. He taught me that if you say you'll do something, you do it. I could go on and on about the things I learned by watching him. I pray that as the years go by I am as good of an example to my kids as my dad was to me.

So here's to more birthdays and getting older. Bring 'em on!!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-20148331020146204492011-07-24T06:04:00.000-07:002011-07-24T06:41:48.979-07:00It's been too longTime to get caught up on some of the happenings around here. Let's start with the most important and exciting of the last few months:

Carter Jane Fortenberry was born May 25 at 10:48 a.m. She weighed in at a whopping 5 lbs 15 oz, 19 1/2 inches long. I was scheduled to be induced about five days later, but woke up with contractions around midnight on the 25th. I timed them for an hour, woke Randy up and told him I thought we needed to go to the hospital. He told me to keep timing them, then he went back to sleep. After timing them for three hours and calling the doctor on call I made him get up and take me to the hospital. My sister in law, Kristi, was here from Nashville to keep the kids for us. He told her we'd be back in a couple of hours. On the way there he kept telling me this was my "one free trip to the hospital". After being hooked up to the monitors for a few hours my doctor came in and decided I was indeed in labor. I hate to say I told you so, but...... Yes, Randy had to eat his words! It was a short labor and not too difficult. After a couple of pushes my sweet baby girl was here!

From day one Carter has been a good baby. Even that first week when I was getting up every hour and a half to feed her at night, she would go right back to sleep. At 6 weeks she was sleeping 5-6 hours a night and now, at 8 weeks is sleeping 8 hours at night! Think at 10 weeks she'll be sleeping 10 hours at night? That would be awesome!! She has started smiling and trying to talk to talk baby talk to us. She has two cute little dimples. When she smiles her whole face lights up! She cries when she's hungry, poopy, or sleepy. If every baby was this easy I'd have a whole brood of them! Wait, I do have a whole brood, even though they all weren't as easy as she's been. The kids are loving her. Tyler is an awesome big brother. He helps feed her some, no diaper changing yet though (don't worry, it's coming)! Hailey is a HUGE help. She loves being Carter's other little mommy. She changes her clothes, her diaper, and feeds her. Sadie makes sure Carter knows she's loved. Carter probably receives fifty kisses a day from her little big sister. As you know from some of my previous posts, Sadie is a little on the mischievious side, so we have to watch her. Randy found a zip tie on Carters fingers the other day that Sadie had put there. We explained to Sadie that babies can get things in their mouths and choke so she can't be trying to "bling" up the baby. As you can tell I'm totally in love with this baby and can't imagine life without her.

Some other happenings:

Randy had shoulder surgery a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully it wasn't as bad as they thought it would be. He's still been in a lot of pain and recovery will take a while, but he can function better than we thought.

Our company, United Steel Works is steadily getting jobs. Tyler has been working in the office this summer to earn some gas money. I think he's learned a lot and has a new respect for the construction industry. As of last week I am the Business Administrator. Fancy title, huh? I'm really just a glorified bookeeper. I still have my real job at Trinity United Methodist, I'm just going to spend an hour or two a day on the USW stuff.

Speaking of Trinity, I go back to work a week from tomorrow. I've had a good maternity leave. The kids and I have gone to the pool alot, bowling some, and just hung out together. Tyler spends most of his time with his best friend Justin. Last week the girls went to Trinity for Vacation Bible School. They had the best time! Trinity does an awesome VBS every year and has other great programs that the kids have gone to over the years I've worked there.

I found the sweetest person to keep Carter when I go back to work. She's a girl I go to church with who keeps kids in her home. I'm so thankful Carter was able to get a spot with her and won't have to go to daycare. It's going to make going back to work so much easier.

All in all we're having a pretty good summer. I'm looking forward to the fall and some cooler weather. Praying for more work for the company. Praying for good teachers and a good start to the school year for the kids. Sadie starts big school this year, so praying that transition goes smoothly.

I guess I need to change the name of the blog since we're up to six now. Should it be six fortenberries? Any suggestions? Email me, send me a fb message, or just call me with any ideas!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-62878841573214873902011-04-01T07:58:00.000-07:002011-04-01T08:01:04.548-07:00Baby Whisperer

He's been at it again! He gets a hold of those babies and they don't stand a chance! My niece Shayden was at our house last night. She was getting fussy and fighting going to sleep. Randy took her from my sister in law and worked his magic! Can't you see why I love this man?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-91593356617301142532011-03-30T12:27:00.001-07:002011-03-31T07:43:40.379-07:00Better Late Than NeverYes, I'm a terribly inconsistent blogger. ONE post this year! I'm so ashamed. Things are trucking along in the Fortenberry household. The kids are doing great in school. Tyler is taking a full load including Anatomy this semester and has done really well. He is currently dissecting a cat (better him than me). Hailey continues with all A's on her report card. Sadie hasn't had any notes sent home, so I'm assuming any havoc she's wreaking in the classroom isn't too much for her teacher to handle! We are about 8 weeks away from welcoming the new addition to our family. We found out in January that we're having another girl! Carter Jane will be her name. Carter after our friend Greg Carter who tragically passed away last year, and Jane after our niece Macy Jane. We can't wait to meet her! Hailey has lost two teeth recently. She informed us last night that the tooth fairy shorted her a dollar on the last tooth. I told her there were no set rules on how much the tooth fairy brings. Daylight savings time has been a huge adjustment for some of us in the mornings (Sadie). She is our night owl and loves to sleep late. I've never had a child who sleeps late so this is a new battle for us. Ever since the time change it has been a HUGE struggle getting her out of bed in the mornings. Even putting her to bed earlier hasn't helped. I love having the daylight later every day, but I can't decide if it's worth the aggravation in the mornings!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-72311206230965428972011-01-03T06:22:00.000-08:002011-01-03T06:47:40.958-08:00Wrapping Up 20102010 was a roller coaster of ups and downs. We planned and went on our first Disneyworld trip. During that trip one of Randy's best friends was killed in a car accident. The following month Randy was laid off from his job. We immediately began the process to start our own company (talk about stressful). Thanks to the help of lots of friends it has not been nearly as painful as I thought it would be. United Steel Works, Inc. is slowly getting work and paying the bills. We found out we're having a baby, due June 2!! Tyler turned 16 (that has been MORE painful than I thought it would be). And last but certainly not least, I have a new baby niece. Shayden Elizabeth graced this world on December 28! This brings me to a total of 7 nieces and nephews! I'm so glad 2010 ended on a good note! God has blessed us so much!

The kids had a great Christmas. Actually, I think it was one of the best Christmases ever! We put a lot of thought into what we got them and didn't go overboard with a bunch of junky stuff. It was just the right amount and everyone was happy. For the first time since we've been married we had a traditional New Years meal complete with ham, black eyed peas and cornbread. No greens, I couldn't stand the smell. We substituted with sweet and sour green beans (an awesome recipe courtesy of my friend Lisa).

I'm glad 2010 is over. It was a year of change and growth, both of which can be painful. I'm looking forward to 2011. Our new baby, spending time with my family and friends, new business opportunities and just seeing what God has in store for us!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-56131092799138656592010-11-02T14:56:00.000-07:002010-11-02T17:01:10.823-07:00Sixteen

How did it happen so fast? Where did the time go? Tyler turned sixteen yesterday! My baby boy came into this world November 1, 1994 weighing in at 5 pounds 5 ounces. He's now 5 feet 5 inches and weighs about 160 pounds.

He went through stages as a kid where he LOVED a certain movie and would want to watch it multiple times a day. I think it started with The Lion King, then moved on to Mighty Ducks. But his all time favorite was Disney's Hercules! He had every action figure, sword and shield that they made. He even had a Hercules board game. I didn't think about it until the last minute or I would have hunted some Hercules plates for this birthday. I bought Toy Story instead. He loved that movie too. (Are you ever really too old for a Toy Story birthday?)

He is a good kid, an awesome brother, a good student, a great wrestler. I have prayed a hedge around him since he was a little boy and he would get so mad he'd bang his head on the wall or a piece of furniture. I've prayed every time he started a new school and a new school year. I've prayed for decisions he's had to make and choices he hasn't had to make yet. Now that he's going to be driving I'll be praying for him even more.

I'm so proud of you Tyler and love you very much.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-12193307278213434122010-07-10T05:26:00.001-07:002010-07-10T05:38:25.129-07:00Bowling!

I took Friday off to spend some extra time with the kiddos. Our friend Greg bowls on a league nd gave us lots of free game passes. (Thanks Greg!!!). So the five of us headed over to the bowling alley. Sadie needed bumpers so she had a lane all to herself. While the rest of us bowled two games, she bowled a total of five! I kept asking her if she was tired and wanted to stop. I think she would have bowled five more! This was Hailey's first time to bowl without bumpers. She got the hang of it pretty quickly and even had one strike. Randy had a hard time finding a ball that didn't stick to his fingers. But he pulled out a few strikes as well. Tyler was pretty rusty at first. About half way through the second game he figured it all out and ended up with the high score of the day. I didn't bowl great but had a great time with my family!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-28779390610815521562010-06-18T04:20:00.000-07:002010-06-18T04:26:31.715-07:00Photographer
We are well into summer now. A lot has happened over the last few weeks. Randy lost his job. We're starting our own company. In the meantime we're doing everything we can to save money. So we've pulled Sadie out of day care for the summer and thanks to the help of Mimi, Tyler and Macy she's being well taken care of. My niece Macy has stayed with her several days. She has recently picked up the hobby of photography. I am so impressed with what she's done. I really think she's got a gift for this. She took this picture of Sadie while she was babysitting the other day. I love it! You don't find Sadie being still for very long and in just an instant Macy captured a beautiful picture of my little wild child. One of his best friends, Greg Carter, was killed in a one car accident on I-20 on his way to Orlando. Greg was working in Orlando and had come home for the weekend. Sunday afternoon he was on his way back down there when he lost control of his truck, went off the interstate and hit a tree. We were on vacation in Disney World when Randy got the call. Greg was going to pick Randy up the next morning so they could go check on the job. Instead, Randy left Monday morning to come back to Birmingham.

Greg wasn't just Randy's friend, he was a friend to our family. He stayed with Randy's parents for about a year when he was working in town. He was there when Randy's dad was out of town and his mom had a seizure. He came to Hailey's Christmas program at church. Two weeks before the accident Tyler got the opportunity to go to Phoenix Arizona for a week to a disc golf tournament. We couldn't buy him a plane ticket out there so he rode with Greg. I am so thankful Tyler got to spend that week with Greg. If you ever needed anything, Greg was there. He loved our kids. He loved disc golf. He loved Alabama football.

There are people that pass through our lives that make us want to be better people. We are so blessed to have known Greg. I pray Tyler and Hailey will always remember him and that he made an impact in their lives. I pray I can be a friend like Greg and I'm so thankful God gave him to us for that little bit of time.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-59749804811062684712010-04-04T12:54:00.001-07:002010-04-04T13:36:23.751-07:00Walt Disney World Pictures<img style="display:block; I know at some point I must have because I remember associating it with the Catholic church. A few years ago I began working at a Methodist church and came to realize it wasn't just a Catholic thing. I started working there in February, just before the Lenten season. I learned all kinds of new terms, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, etc. I had no idea what they all meant but I knew they were important because they had a service for each of these days and I helped run the bulletins for all of these services. Each year I've learned more and more about the significance of Lent. I think Adam Hamilton sums it up best in the devotional book "24 Hours That Changed The World". He says "It is a time of more intense spiritual seeking, devotion, and preparation climaxing in Holy Week with the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus."

Over the years all my friends I work with have given up something for Lent. Many of them take something on as well. I decided this year I would try it out. So for this Lenten season I'm giving up my coffee. I ritually have two cups each and every morning. Yesterday was the first day with no coffee. Today the first word that popped into my head before I even opened my eyes was "coffee". I know in the big scheme of things giving up coffee doesn't seem like much of a sacrifice. But you know what I did this morning when that word popped into my head? I said a little prayer that God would help me resist the temptation. And if I can learn to depend on Him to get me through my coffee cravings, how much more can I turn over to Him in other areas of my life that need improvement?

The idea of taking something on is to open yourself up to be a servant. So I'm not just giving something up, I'm also going to take something on. On Wednesday nights in Sadie's class one of the teachers is having some health problems. Her other teacher is a little overwhelmed with all the three year olds in that class. So I'm going to start helping her out in there.

Whether you observe the Lenten season or not, take a moment to reflect on the sacrifice that was given for you. What amazing love!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-30769411217467768502010-02-14T17:47:00.000-08:002010-02-14T17:55:30.680-08:00Desperate Times call for Drastic MeasuresTyler is addicted to video games. He has a blue tooth headset that he uses when he's playing some of his games online. A few weeks ago the ear piece broke off the blue tooth. I assumed he would use some of his money to purchase a new one. I went downstairs to what we call "the dungeon" one day to check on him because he had not seen the light of day in a while. This is what I found when I went down:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyI0LmOWpvcGAT9hYOTkagh4Riebp_KY5CQS38LWFTIKPoPwL6OywZ0OLXCFkdMsjd0B7W8_d1oCxtgH0I0tLKks4_OfXYqHAYyo5hyuXhB3g5Yb_-7P-2Oz6_OQgmK-9P-oEVzYPtyjq9/s320/P1010136.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438281748840573826" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6TPiP42RNXCkgWi4evnfn_kVprZuPJ9196owd1ynufDic51_3-_yc_pu0SFZIOyAAARI7xPSW1AnQEUF5Zo9eERkoUTal6fa1ltI8BCyu7hOSwQuZbI4mwpQeyEA7ORrguwf50T6udw6U/s320/P1010135.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438281742179743986" />

I hope you can tell by the pictures that he used packing tape to tape the broken blue tooth to stay in his ear. Hailey got her skates on and was off. She hadn't been on those skates five minutes and she came over to where I was with tears in her eyes holding her wrist. We immediately went to the concession stand and got a bag of ice to put on it. Needless to say that was the end of her skating that day. It continued to swell over the weekend.

I took her to the orthopedic doctor Monday. The x-rays didn't show any obvious breaks but her doctor felt that the fall had affected the growth plates in her wrist and hand. As you can see she's been in a cast for the last two weeks. She picked lime green for the color and has now had all her classmates sign it. We go back tomorrow afternoon to get it off. Pray that everything looks good and she won't have to go back into another cast.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTjjvkvPfEMn_kkG3mpyurr-dQkXSGJIafJVxMTPUoQLYFt__evW71QNFwpfLQC6XnjWfLLBPrU5riFdolU4RPCHQHyQ8hA_LsgPs5rj8CrfmeimCjsyQsSwpJx1-FLURgM2OBM2rnVvRr/s320/P1010143.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438278883427139666" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-45682032846761330432010-02-13T05:55:00.000-08:002010-02-13T06:12:33.765-08:00Snow Day!!!!So we finally get a decent snow after all the misses the last couple of months. It was a challenge keeping the kids inside until the ground had a good covering. I kept telling them if they'd wait until it built up it would be that much more fun. Fortunately the neighbors had the same idea. After lunch all the neighbor kids were out so I couldn't keep them in any longer. As you can tell from the pictures they had a blast.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-17690502008481766412010-01-23T05:42:00.000-08:002010-01-23T06:07:57.280-08:00Same Kind of Different As MeSame Kind of Different As Me is one of my favorite books. It's a true story about a homeless man and an international art dealer brought together by an obedient and faithful Christian lady. When they decided to follow God's will, He changed their lives forever.

I went to Samford University last night to hear the authors of the book speak. The authors are the two men the book is about, Denver Moore and Ron Hall. The lady who changed their lives was Debbie Hall, Ron's wife. She passed away several years ago but the work God did through her is amazing! I highly recommend you read this book.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-24119677062317279112010-01-13T04:03:00.000-08:002010-01-13T04:07:30.579-08:00Spelling Bee ChampHailey won her class spelling bee Monday. She went on to the school spelling bee Tuesday morning. She finished fourth! She went 4 or 5 rounds doing really well and then the word "sculpture" got her. She received a medal and a certificate. She wasn't the first place winner, but she's a champ to us and we're so proud of her!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-65430362175185523192010-01-02T04:53:00.000-08:002010-01-02T05:27:54.094-08:002009 Wrap UpSo here it is, a summary of the last few months of 2009. After the doctor told us he needed two more months to heal Randy and I decided we needed another opinion. Randy had a doctor who did his knee surgery a couple of years ago. After over a week and much time on the phone trying to get records transferred I ended up having to go pick them up and deliver them myself to the new doctor. Dr. Flanagan ordered a CT scan which showed that it really hadn't healed much at all and told us he needed surgery.

On November 17 Tyler had surgery to have a screw put into his elbow and a bone graft done from his hip to fill in where the screw went. We're now a month out from surgery and it seems to be healing. He was put into an arm brace three weeks after surgery and is now going through some physical therapy to increase his flexibility and strength in that arm. We go back to the doctor December 31 and are praying after 4 1/2 months of this he will finally be able to do more than play video games!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6050045754874674392.post-37481157610781204252009-10-30T15:49:00.000-07:002009-10-31T06:36:04.519-07:00Good eats

Our friends Greg & Andrea and their baby, Samantha (Sam for short) are over almost every weekend. He can do more with it now, throw a ball, ride his bike, etc. but he can not do any contact sports for two months. His doctor said it would just take one good hit to that elbow and it would re break. Then we'd be looking at surgery. Unfortunately this means he's out for this wrestling season. Needless to say, he's very disappointed. This would have been his second year wrestling. He went to a week long camp in Georgia during the summer and has been very dedicated to workouts, even running when he was in the cast & splint. He has a great coach who will still let him be part of the team, go to the matches to support the guys. But it won't be the same as being on the mat. It's hard seeing your kids disappointed about things that are beyond our control. But I think it's times like this that give your kids the opportunity to build character.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1
